One of the most spectacular swords in Spanish history, the Catholic Monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella, knighted Christopher Columbus on his return from his first voyage to America. In the Throne Hall of the Royal Palace in Barcelona, Columbus was named ‘Admiral of the Ocean’ and ‘Viceroy of the Indies’. A ceremonial sword that was used as the symbol of the royal power in all religious and political ceremonies, since the conquest of Grenada and the beginning of Spain as a nation.
The cast metal hand guard with antiqued silver finish bears the inscription or motto ‘Tanto Monta, Monta Tanto’, which appeared on the Spanish Royal Standard of the Catholic Kings from 1492-1506. The motto refers to both Catholic monarchs: Isabella and Ferdinand and loosely translates to: ‘As much as the one is worth, so much is the other’ meaning that both King and Queen held equal authority, also seen on the Spanish flags that Christopher Columbus brought to the New World.
Cast metal pommel with antiqued silver finish and elegant handgrip covered with soft brown suede and metal wire wrap.
Marto was founded in 1961 in the old district of Toledo and certifies all swords are designed, developed and manufactured in Toledo-Spain by its skilled and recognised artists, craftsmen and sword masters that join traditional handicraft with the most modern techniques and manufacture the finest decorative swords available in the world today.
